The Samsung Chromebook 2 is a trendsetter
Think about your typical laptop with all of its features. Even the ones that are considered light still weigh between three and six pounds.
Samsung is completely changing the game – this Chromebook weighs just 2.65 pounds. That’s roughly the same weight as a water bottle that holds a liter of water.
Not just light, though.
It’s also absurdly fast.
One of the biggest problems with laptops these days is the boot times. You turn it on and it takes between two to three minutes to boot up. Then, when you want to log in, it takes another minute or two to set up your desktop and load all of the applications.
The Samsung Chromebook 2, on the other hand, boots in 10 seconds and wakes up in one second.
This might seem like overkill, but in the grand scheme of things, it will save you a lot of time and headache. Even ten minutes a day waiting for your laptop to get ready adds up to 60 hours per year of your life wasted – we did the math.
How can it do this?
Surely something so light and fast must compromise by subtracting features elsewhere?
Not really, actually. The Samsung Chromebook 2’s best feature is its processor. It’s not the standard Intel or AMD processor that you’d find on any other laptop or Chromebook – it’s Samsung’s very own Exynos 5 Octave processor.
Besides the slow loading times, the problem with intel and AMD chips is that you pay for the third party company. It makes sense – any computer manufacturer will have to pay a premium for one of these companies to make the chips. Not only is the Exynos 5 Octave faster than the other chips, but you pay less for it because Samsung makes it in-house.
How does 2/3 of an inch sound?
Bulky laptops are a thing of the past, but even thinner ones fall short of the Samsung Chromebook 2. It’s just 0.66” thick – take out a ruler, check how big an inch is, then take just 2/3 of that. You’ll be astonished that technology has come so far.
That thickness doesn’t sacrifice speed, though. Samsung designed its processor to be not only thin and lightweight, but also powerful. This Chromebook boasts 4 GB of RAM, which is double the amount that you’d get in a similar laptop with similar physical features from another company.
Will it get slower, though?
Own a laptop for anywhere past six months and you’ll see usually notice a decrease in speed. Samsung created this Chromebook with this common annoyance in mind.
Every model comes with built-in virus and malware protection. Even if you visit some sketchy websites, the laptop will inherently be able to fend off attackers and malicious scripts. Usually, you’d have to install virus software to do this, which would slow down your machine considerably right out of the box.
It does this by running your applications and your hard drive in separate instances. Viruses trying to get to your hard drive from applications (like your web browser) are stopped cold.
Yet another reason to consider this laptop.
A businessman’s best friend
Aside from malware, another common issue with these light Chromebooks is the fact that they don’t do so well when considering video. Sure, they can display it adequately, but if you’re doing a highly-intensive activity (like video chatting with three other people) then it will begin to lag.
Again, Samsung kept this in mind. The inner workings are optimized for these labor intensive video tasks like video calls. Because it’s so thin, you can pop this thing out anywhere – at your house, in the office, in a coffee shop, or on the train – and be able to connect to multiple people immediately.
The technology behind it is image optimization. Believe it or not, those big images that you have can be reduced in size by 50% to 75% and still look exactly the same. Samsung does this on the fly whenever you load an image or watch a video, which maintains its lightning-quick speed.
Why wouldn’t you want it?
Although the Samsung Chromebook 2 is packed with features that other Chromebooks don’t have, there is one downside: it’s small.
This can be a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good because of how portable it is. But, if you’re using it somewhere stationary like at the office, then it might be worth considering another laptop. You’ll only really get to experience its portability if you’re moving it around.
That’s not to say that it’s not good for a backup device. Very few of us just have a desktop computer these days. We have smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
Because of how light it is, this can completely replace your tablet and laptop needs. Just get another bigger, more powerful one to use in places where you know you’re not going to be moving around.
We’ll finish up this review by pointing something out – all of the reviews for this Chromebook are outstanding. Usually, you’ll get people from different walks of life complaining about different things in even the best laptops, but Samsung has a 5-star rating on Amazon which is superb for a Chromebook priced under $300.
